Katha powder for natural brunette tones

Katha powder comes from the bark of the khadira tree (Acacia catechu). Added to henna, it shifts the colour from red towards a natural brunette brown.

It is a simple way to soften the bright red of henna without using indigo, and it can also be added to henna and indigo blends for a richer brown.

Why use katha powder?

• Browner results: tones down the red of henna.
• Small amounts: a little goes a long way.
• Natural: pure plant powder with no synthetic dyes.

How to use

Only a small amount is needed: add 20g of katha to every 100g of henna powder.

1. Mix the katha powder evenly into the dry henna powder.
2. Add your mixing liquid and stir into a smooth, yoghurt-like paste.
3. Cover and leave for dye release, then apply to clean hair from roots to tips.
4. Leave on as directed for your henna, then rinse with water only.

The colour develops over the next few days. Results depend on your natural hair colour, so always do a strand test first.

Before you start

• Wash your hair with a simple shampoo and no conditioner, so the dye can bind evenly.
• Wear gloves and protect your hairline with a little oil or balm to avoid staining the skin.
• Do a strand test on a few hairs from your hairbrush to check the shade before the full application.
