Pure jagua powder for body art

Our jagua powder is 100% pure Genipa americana with a natural organic preservative to keep it fresh. It is 100% skin safe and gives a blue-black stain. As a natural product, the powder colour can vary slightly from pouch to pouch without affecting the stain.

Jagua comes from the fruit of the Genipa americana tree, native to Central and South America. It gives a temporary design that looks like a real tattoo, with no PPD or so-called black henna.

Use it for

  • Mixing into jagua gel for cones and applicator bottles.
  • Adding to henna to make hengua (jagua and henna blends).

Hengua blends combine the dark tone of jagua with the warmth of henna, giving a deep brown-black stain. Artists often mix the two when clients want something darker than henna but softer than pure jagua.

How to make gel from jagua powder

For every 10g of raw jagua powder you will need 3g of xanthan gum, 3ml of essential oil and 50ml of water.

  1. Mix the jagua powder and xanthan gum together, then add the water and essential oil and stir into a smooth gel.
  2. Leave it to rest so the xanthan gum fully hydrates, then stir again.
  3. Fill cones or applicator bottles, and freeze anything you will not use within a few days.

Our jagua powder premix already contains xanthan gum, so you do not need to add more.

For very fine, delicate work, strain the gel before use, as you would with henna.

Results

Leave the gel on the skin for about 1 to 2 hours, or until dry, then wash it off gently. The design looks faint at first, then darkens to blue-black over 48 to 72 hours and usually lasts one to two weeks. Do a small patch test first.

Storage

Keep unopened pouches in a cool, dry, dark place, or in the freezer for long-term storage. Once mixed, keep jagua gel frozen until needed.
