Xanthan Gum
Xanthan gum for jagua: a natural thickener for turning jagua powder or liquid into gel.
Xanthan gum for making jagua gel
Xanthan gum is a natural thickening agent, also widely used in gluten-free baking. As xanthan gum for jagua, mixed with jagua powder or liquid, it makes a gel that works in henna cones and applicator bottles.
Without a thickener, jagua is too runny to hold a line on the skin. A small amount of xanthan gum turns it into a smooth, controllable gel.
Why use xanthan gum for jagua?
- Clean lines: the gel holds its shape and does not bleed into the skin around the design.
- Smooth flow: works well in both cones and applicator bottles.
- A little goes a long way: only a few grams are needed per batch.
Making jagua gel from jagua powder
For every 10g of raw jagua powder you will need 3g of xanthan gum, 3ml of essential oil and 50ml of water.
- Mix the jagua powder and xanthan gum together, then add the water and essential oil and stir into a smooth gel.
- Leave it to rest so the xanthan gum fully hydrates, then stir again.
- Fill cones or applicator bottles, and freeze anything you will not use within a few days.
Making jagua gel from jagua liquid
Use up to 7g of xanthan gum for every 120ml of jagua liquid. Sprinkle it in a little at a time while stirring, and stop once the gel is thick enough to hold a line.
Our jagua powder premix already contains xanthan gum, so you do not need to add more if you use premix.
Tips
- Add xanthan gum for jagua slowly to avoid lumps.
- Let the gel rest before judging the consistency, as it continues to thicken.
- For very fine work, strain the gel through a stocking before filling your cones.
Storage
Keep the pouch sealed in a cool, dry place. Moisture makes the powder clump.
